Hi guys
I am planning on travelling to shantou in early may.
heading to the town on anpu.
any hotels that you could recommend?
Are you sure you don’t mean Anbu? Can’t think of anywhere called Anpu…
Anbu is in Chaozhou.
Anbu is right next to Shantou, Chaozhou you still have to drive another 40 min
Maggie,
I’m just curious if you know how to speak the local dialect - Teochew.
If so, did you find it hard to learn — let say versus mandarin.
Thanks.
Hmm… my Chaoshanhua is kind of average. I’ve found a book (in Chinese) that’s helping some now that my Chinese is good enough. The main difficulty is lack of pinyin, that no locals can name which tone a word is using, and the fact I put more effort into Mandarin. However my book has reasonable Chaoshan pinyin and a tape, so suddenly all is becoming clear.
Maggie and Richard,
Thanks
Nice work and keep going. A suggestion..you’ll probably get more visitors on this site if it is expanded to cover whole of Chaoshan area. More area n materials to cover n rave about too. Its your decision though
Hi Jianfu45, thanks for your thoughts. I’ve just replied on the forum, have a look:
Shantou and the surronding area
Noted thanks. I read somewhere on comments by a” Little Bottle” about why this website in English. My answer follows:
Nihao, To Little bottle and all here,
Firstly, this website in English is good for everyone as it will generate interest to look at opinion from whoever n wherever, locally included.
For those in China whose first medium is Putonghua and understand some English or more , this site can be an opener to see the language in its varied form used around the world.
Another point (or for some reasons) .. many huachiao or people of Chinese origin or those with some blood connection,.. due to circumstances in the countries they grew up in and over generations, could not or did not learn to read or write Chinese. Some understand limited huayi but conversant in their Chinese dialects…some speak it but cannot read it and there are those who know parts of each and.. so on.
So, this site in English may reach and help these people one way or other, especially those who has roots in Shantou or thereabouts. They would be pleased to find this site if only to plan a trip or reading about it.
Foreigners who intend to visit China for business or tour would be just as happy to browse on this site to have a sample of what to expect of the region…..and in the end Shantou benefits too:)
Good luck and Kam Siah.
As I have just commented on forum, I would totally like to write about the whole Chaoshan area, if someone would take me there and show me - this is the draw and the frustration of the area - all the best places, you can only get there if someone shows you the way.
visited shantou, anbu, Chaozhou recently, love the food. the fishballs are the best in the world, generally all the food suit me well..miss the food so much
I am STer. I am so happy to find out so many people love ST here.
I was a Dj in Chenghai Radio. I knew a lot fo DJs in China. I sended them pictures of ST and told them how beautifull ST is. Once upon time, one of a DJ from Hanzhong Radio called me and ask me to intruduce ST by phone. After that, I’v got more and more chance to intruduce ST in different radios.
I holp all the STer can show ST to all the people on the world, and more and more people knows ST, visits ST.

I’m not sure if I’m posting in the right section but I couldn’t post somewhere else. If it’s not the right one then please move this comment.
Anyway, I’m planning a trip to Shantou and the area for the October holiday. I’ll be spending a night or two in Shantou and was wondering what there’s to do in the evening. Any place you can recommend to go out? Any other cool place I shouldn’t miss?
Hope you have time to write a line or two back. Best wishes from Qingdao,
Nightfish
