That's interesting what you say about seeking medical treatment in Tuopu, Maggie. I've got a tooth problem, and we saw several dentists along our walk there that looked quite professional. In the end I was not as courageous as you though!

Thank you so much for this great blog. My daughter who was adopted from Shantou was actually found in the Tuopu district, and yours is one of the only descriptions I have ever seen of this area. I am going to print it out for her to read. She wants to know everything possible about her past and her heritage. I could only laugh when I read the part about the Tuopu hillbillies since we now live in Oklahoma where we are called something similar (Okies) by most of America.

An unforgettable place! Each time you went there, there were amazing things you can find. there are many old house with beautiful sculture in inner streets. I also heard Chao Opera for the first time there.
The Niutianyang, a natrual farm not far away, is a great place to travel and take pictures. However, there was a terrible tsunami in the farm which took away hundreds of solders in the 1960s. At that time, former Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing was serverd in the farm too. Li visited the farm again in Dec 2007.

Yes I did - it's under 'Chinese Medicine', and the next couple of blogs are from that time too, Shantou is really not yet geared up to mobility-impaired people.. But Shantou people are really great at looking after mobility-impaired people, and I think this makes up for a lot

Love this article! Did I ever write about my broken foot? I was taken to a local Chinese medicine doctor in tuopu. It was an experience! Actually it was the second - my first was for a swollen hand, which he said was strained and some people (including me) suspected might be fractured... it sure swelled up a lot after the massage... ok now, though! And the foot was great, although I kept off it for six weeks, when he said I could walk on it after 10 days... He also dealt with my friend's broken ankle... Hmm... memories...
