Right, I’m Maggie, an English teacher in Shantou, and I actually like it. Richard asked me to help him coz he lives in England at the mo so doesn’t get many up-to-the-mintute experiences of here, and wanted someone who does.
People who know me: we are looking for contributors so if you have anything to say, e-mail it over and I’ll stick it on and give you credit, if you often have things to say we’ll make you your own id. Also this includes pictures you might wish to share with the world. If your thoughts don’t fit in an existing category we just make a new one.
I haven’t written so publicly before so it’ll be interesting writing for a completely open audience.

I have visited Shantou twice from Lewiston, Idaho; where my sife, who lives in Shantou, will join me shortly. I find it a beautiful and fascinating city, and I enjoy this website very much. I would like to thank you for it. I have many photos of Shantou I would like to post, if possible. Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Wayne Eastman
Yes, absolutely! I’m glad you like it here – Shantou’s great and has it’s own identity, which I think makes it special. We’d welcome your photos – I’m sure Richard will e-mail you soon – I think he has your address.
Maggie! Been a while, I’m so sorry! I lost your address (along with everyone else’s) after I left in mid-2004 (Shantou University). I take it you’re still there! I’m back in Melbourne after a year in Canada, send me your email address and I’ll drop you a line.
Hi, I was born in Lu Feng, where is about 2 hrs by car to Shan tou and I have been to Shan tou for a number of times. I love the food there especially the meat ball in the market. I am now so far away from home and China and actually I miss home very much.
I hope people living in China can come to visit my blog and share their life living abroad, i.e. China with me.
I don’t have any picture of Shantou but I might take a few of Manchester soon.
I believe I might be working with you soon. I will be arriving in Shantou on the 19th. I hope I am correct in my assumption.
GREAT website!! It has helped me out a lot and I’ve learned so much about Shantou, a lot more than the travel books have given me. Keep it up and, I think, I will see you soon.
Ciao Ciao
Hmm… not at my school… our teachers (I hope and pray) are arriving on 29th. If you look here again – get in touch. Ask your workmates if they know me. Maggie, does taekwondo. If they’re English teachers, they probably do. See you soon…
Hi Maggie,
I am from Singapore and planning to visit Shantou end of the year. As there is no international airport in Shantou, how do you get there from oustside China?
Is there any store in Shantou selling microscopes and science apparatus?
Thanks.
From Singapore, you fly into Xiamen airport and either get a flight from there to Shantou, or catch a bus.
I shall have to think about the microscopes thing. Let me get back to you.
oh, just saw the word ”microscopes”, I misread it as ”microphone” in your email, Desmond, sorry!
Nice blog~

Hello, Maggie. I found your blog from a Shantou’s BBS. It is very surprising to find so a good blog, about Shantou, estaished and maintained quite well by a foreigner. Firstly, I warmly weocome you to work in Shantou, which is my hometown. I was born in Shantou and lived there for 20 years. After finishing my undergraduate studies in Shantou University, I came to Shanghai to pursue my master’s degree and finally obtained it two months ago. I am also very concerned about the current situation and future development of Shantou, as well as her education and culture. Quite nice to meet you! I think we can take further communications via email or any other tool if you agree. It is my pleasure to provide anythink I know about Shantou if you need. May I have a request that if you can give me your own email address? Hope to be your friend! Warm welcome to Shantou again! Wish you have a good time in Shantou!
Hello, Maggie. Although my major is Law, I have interest in regional economics and society, as well as culture studies in Chaoshan Area. Would you please write email to me if you agree to share your opinions and any other things about Shantou that you like? I have left my email address in the Mail that your system required when I added my comment.
Hi!
the owner of a local primary school here in Shantou would like to hire an american teacher to teach english. he’s offering a decent salary 20k-25kusd, lodging, and roundtrip airfare from US/Canada to Shantou. Can you let me know if you know anyone who may be interested or perhaps post on your blog? Thanks! Feel free to contact me it if you have further questions.

Hi Maggie,
Do you know if there is a bus that goes directly from Shantou to the Xiamen Airport and when is the earliest bus? I have aflight from Xiamen on Mon taking off at 12.30pm. If I can catch a bus direct from Shantou to Xiamen airport, I would rather do that than to spend a night at Xiamen. I know there is a service from the Xiamen Airport direct to Shantou- so I suspect there is one the opposite direction. Thanks.
