Hi Maggie,
I was told of your site this morning by my colleague Alan. I am an engineer working in Chenghai but I live in Shantou with my Chinese wife and 2 yr old daughter.
I am currently looking for a dual language kindergarten where my daughter can spend 2 or 3 mornings each week in a play and learn situation. I dont want her to do 5 days a week or to go to a “teaching” school when she is so young.
Perhaps some of your audience can help with this information.
I have enjoyed reading your pages this morning and will do so on a regular basis. Yes a good korean meal would be great.
Ron
I have asked my foreign co-teacher who also a child about your age that is starting kindergarden next week. He gave me the details of a place, here it is:
南希双语幼儿园 Nancy English Kindergarten
He said it works out at about 5000rmb a term, for a whole day five days a week. He didn’t seem to know about part-time.
Phone number: 0754 8527123
滨港路金厦园中区17幢(东方公园东侧)Bingang Road, Jinxia Garden central, building 17 (Dongfang Park east side).
He also said there was a decent one in Danxia Zhuang (丹厦庄) (The area enclosed between Jinsha, Changping, Huashan and Tianshan Roads). It’s a government run one, so it’s probably not bi-lingual.
I have an Irish friend who works 3 hrs every weekday morning at (小森林幼儿园)Xiao Senlin Kindergarten. She has a small class and thinks the school is pretty good. This is about hald way down on what I call Walmart Street - the alley between Walmart and Huashan Road.
thanks Maggie, I will discuss with my wife

My boyfriend and I had been planning on coming to Shantou to teach English. We broke up a few days ago, and now he is not going to go. Do you think I should still go alone? What is your opinion? I am from the United States.
To be quite honest, it depends which school you’re planning to work for. How did you come to this page? Was it something to do with kindergardens? I’d like to carry this conversation on by e-mail, as this isn’t the place to make comments about schools, especially as I myself am in charge of recruiting for one.
HI, MAGGIE!
MY NAME IS MICHAEL, I LIVE IN SHANTOU WITH MY WIFE WIFE SHEILAR AND MY 6 YEARS OLD SON MEDEE, WE ARE THE LOCAL PEOPLE, BUT TO MY SON, WE HAVE A “ONE PARENT ONE LANGUAGE ” PROGRAM TO HIM, NOW ALL OF US CAN SPEAK IN ENGLISH QUITE WELL.
AND WE TRY TO MAKE FRIEND TO FOREIGNER SPECIALLY WHO HAS A KID LIVE IN SHANTOU.
OR WE JUST LOOKING FOR PART-TIME CLASS AT NIGHT, AS MY KID LACK OF EXPERIENCE TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE FOREIGNER.
I AM QUITE APPREICATED THAT IF YOU HELP ME IN THIS WAY.
WAIT FOR YOUR KIND REPLY SOON.
Well there is a general lack of school age foreign children in Shantou. I saw a French boy today, but I don’t know him (and he was speaking French), and I teach a Korean boy taekwondo - but he doesn’t speak English.
It’s a very cool idea about the English though! Foreigners generally object to people making friends with them in order to practice English, but I’m pretty sure I can find a teacher to have conversation classes with your boy if you’re interested. I’ll e-mail you.
THANKS ALOT! I JUST DON’T WANT HIM FEEL SPECIAL AND ALONE AS HE KNOWS ENGLISH, AND IT IS NOT GOOD FOR HIS CHARACTER.
SO I TRY TO GET SOME FREINDS WHO CAN SPEAK NATURE ENGLISH, THEN HE WILL UNDERSTAND NOT ONLY HIM, BUT ALSO OTHER PEOPLE SPEAK ENGLISH IN SHANTOU.
I AM QUITE APPRECIATED FOR YOUR KIND HELP, AND I THINK YOU WILL BE A NICE FRIEND IF WE CAN MAKE.
IT IS SO INTERSTING THAT WE COMMUNICATE THROUGH INTERNET LIKE THIS, AND WAIT FOR YOUR EMAIL.
hi,i came here by accident as i was looking for some photos about shantou, and i realli like this website~
i’m shantou local and am doing my bachelor degree in sydney australia.
honestly i love my hometown but i think its in a forgotten corner for ages that no one will ever get interests in it. it did has a glorious history, but now,the crap econ environment is like downgrading the whole city image.
most chineses love labelling ppl and places, and in this case, wealthy cities, like western style wannabe shanghai, surely attracts most attention from foreigners.
and to my surprise, there’s someone from another cultural background living in shantou and documenting memories and special moments~
wish u hav a pleasant stay in shantou
Thank you very much! If it can ever sort out the corruption, I’m sure it’ll be Extremely successful - Chaoshan people overseas certainly are.
I am so happen to drop in this webside when I was hunting someone we live in Shantou as native English speaker with whom I can communicate in English. I am a native Shantounese who living and working in Shantou. Will you nice enough to introduce one or maybe we can be friend. Thanks for your kindly attention.
Well several teachers are looking for extra work, are you prepared to pay for your conversation time?
I plan to visit a brother of my deceased mom who lives in Shantou, but neither he or his family can speak English, around middle of next month. I’m looking for a translator for two days, maybe some student from university fluent in English (it will be for one weekend only). Please let me know asap.
hi, this is sophia and i’m a local living in Gurao town, chaoyang district, Shantou. Gurao is famous for underwear-manufacturing and selling. i’m now working in Jiangmen city, Guangdong and i come to Gurao to see my parents during National day. i’m very glad to be your tour when anybody come to Gurao. Nice to see you in Gurao. Do not hesitate to contact me. E-mail: sophia_evron@126.com
HI. MAGGIE, NICE TO SEE YOU AGAIN!
AS I HEAR YOU SAY THAT SOME TAECHER ARE LOOKING FOR EXRA WORK, SO CAN YOU HELP ME TO FIND A TEACHER COME FROM USA ( WITH THE NATIVE US ACENT), AS MY KID HAS GOT USED TO IT , WE PLAN TO FIND ONE TEACHER TO TEACH MY KID WRITTEN ENGLISH FROM ABC BEGINNING, MY SON IS SIX YEARS OLD NOW, AND HE CAN SPEAK IN ENGLISH ( AS I TOLD YOU BEFORE).
WE HOPE THAT IT CAN BE ONE CLASS ON FIRDAY NIGHT( AS HE GOES TO PRIMARY SCHOOL THIS YEAR), THE TEACHER CAN TEACHER MY SON ONE TO ONE IN HIS WAY ( NOT IN CHINESE WAYS)
I WILL BE QUITE APPRECAITED IF YOU CAN FIND ONE FOR ME, AND FOR THE TUITION AND OTHER STUFF YOU CAN EMAIL ME LATER.
WAIT FORY OUR KIND REPLY SOON.
Yeah! Depends on the teacher you introduce!
Hi Maggie,
I was so glad to see your web site.
I arrived few days ago to Shantou and rented a place in Cheghai City, few km from Shantou. I work in the toy industry and this city is known as the “toy city”.
I’m going to spend here 2-3 months and will probably visit often after that.
I would love to meet some of the foreigners that live here, Chenghai is quite boring I have to say but I didn’t have any expectations…
Keep in touch and let me know if there is any gathering somewhere.
Also, I’m looking for an employee - web master that can speak English, do you know of anybody or can refer me to any web site or school?
Thanks in advance,
Idan
Hi!
i’m quite agree with bro seann’s opinion…
hope Shantou gets well in 2007 and the future

Hi Maggie! I finally found your website, thanks to Tingting. I can’t wait to search through the whole thing as you know Shantou is like my second home. Since I am the mom to two kids adopted from Shantou, our family considers ourselves Shantouren forever and we love meeting people from this region.
Hope you are doing well! Three people from LWB will be in Shantou the first week of March. I hope you can meet them!
Amy

YiFenNet has left us some links - I don’t really understand the first one, the second one lists the lengths of all the main roads in Shantou (?!) - the longest is Taishan Road at 10km, the third link has lots of photos of Shantou - the not so pretty kind, you will probably appreciate his comments if you can read Chinese. The fourth is a picture of my advert that I did recently!
Hi,
I am pleading with any kind loving families or singletons out there who would like to take charge of my two beautiful kittens. Well slightly older cats- my term of teaching here will be up soon and as it pains me to sya I cannot afford the fees to take them back to the UK. They are a pair and I want them to stay together as they adore each other and cuddle each other. Their names are bottletop and scandanavian breakfast(scandy) wonderfully trained and loving.
Please if anyone thinks they can offer them a pair please contact me and I can send pictures etc.
I want them to go to people who will love them and play with them occasionally.
Thank you
Lisa
Hi, Lisa!
I post your request to our Forum, have a look!
Hi,Maggie.Nice to know you!My name is norika,I’m a local girl. I heard of that you could speak Shantou Language, I’m very surprised at it. Because it is very difficult to learn even Chinese. You are really a pretty and hard-working girl. If you come online sometime, please add my MSN at : norika166@hotmail.com
One practical problem: How do you guys travel in and out of Swatow? My flights from the US always landed at night either Hong Kong or Guangzhou and my family drove me back to Swatow, which often is very painful. I wonder if any of you figure out a better way?

I am holding an English club in Shantou. It is an nonprofit organization for all English enthusiasm to practice their oral English. This English Club is open every Friday night at Coffee Language, Huashan Road, Shantou.
If you all visit Shantou, and if you want to know more Shantou people, you are most welcome to visit us, there are people from different fields talking in English.
You are also welcome to write to me: cherrylee2270@126.com for more information of our English Club.

Hi Cherry,
I checked our history and didn’t see any comments you left several days ago. Perhaps it was the problems of the system.
Anyway, I will talk with you in email.
Hi Richard,
I have sent you an e-mail yesterday, if you have got it?
Hello, there,
I come to your site by total accident! But was nice to see so many of you in Shantou. I visit nt family every year with my British husband and 2 boys. it’s nice to know there are people interested in Shantou. Any British in Shantou at the moment? Hey,everyone,
I’d like to ask if anyone knows where i can take French class in Shantou ?Is there any language institution for people to learn French in ST ?Plz let me know if someone know the answer. Thanks in advance !
Someone is from France here ,btw ?
Hi, Sylvia.
There is one training center offering such course.
http://www.stnice.com
You can phone or visit them to see if it is suitable for you.
Cherry
I know there is a French company operating in Shantou with a French boss and at one point they regularly had an intern system, changing intern approx every six months. Also the Golden Gulf hotel has been known to have French girls for work placements. There are several Africans around, often they are Cameroonian and therefore French bilinguals.
Hi ,Cheery,
I’ve checked the website you gave me out the other night , but unfortunately they don’t offord French class,so bad .. but anyway thanks for your help . I appreciate it !
Sylvia

If you like, we can speak French. I can’t do you lesson by books, but just speak I can. Marco

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_51UlZ9S90M
Hey Michael, I’ll have a look at the video if I can download it, and e-mail you back. I can guess maybe which Amy it was, if you have her e-mail you might find she plans to return after Chinese New Year… (American) Other than that, I’m not in Shantou any more, other people might be able to put you in contact, though!
Michael, your son has an absolute fantastic southern English accent, totally natural, and he’s very very cute!
thanks a lot! my friend although we never meet before, but i feel quite happy that you give me some comment about my son english. and i will tell my son about that, i think he will be on the top of the world.
you said you are not in shantou anymore, that mean you have come back to usk already, or just plan to return after chinese new years day, it is quite pity that we don’t have chnce to see each other.
frankly said it is not easy to teach son with two language since he was born, and he is luck as me and my wife and his anty can speak english to him.
and we are quite appreciate that amy gave him a big help as she only teach him a couple of months, but she likes him so much that she even asked her mom to send the local american kid book in grade one, and for learning these book, now my son medee can read a kid story >, and we also keep contact with amy now, and we really hope that she will come back, and maybe in future, amy can teach my son spanish also.
thanks agian! and wish you have a good day today.
Maggie,
We found this website by looking for kindergarten in the internet. My wife Joe family root at Shantou and return to Shantou every year during Chinese new year. We have Scott 4 years and Naomi 2.7 years old and have not been back since they born. We planned to come back Shantou this Chinese new year and also want to make it a mandarin learning experience for the kids. Since Naomi born in San Diego and we also had a year or so in Floria, the kids English is a bit better than Chinese. I wonder if you know any Chinese perhaps kindergarten teacher would like to teach our kids for Chinese may be in a hotel environment or others 1-2 hours per day duration 2 weeks time.
Thanks for reading
Hi Erik and Joe,
Maggie is no longer in Shantou. I’m Richard, one of the bloggers here. I will send you an email for permission, if you want I can post the info for you on the Blog.
Actually there is a forum here for our readers or whoever needs help in Shantou. It’s http://forum.myshantou.net. Maybe you can try there.
Maggie is no longer in Shantou but her billboard is! There is a 20-foot photo of Maggie holding some kind of cooking device on the corner of Changping Lu and Huashan Nanlu. Kudos!
Well, I like to leave my mark!
Happy New Year to all of my friends here~
