    Do you mean me? I don’t teach at Shantou Uni. I teach in a technical school (中专zhong zhuan) in the centre of Shantou. Richard is at uni in England, studying!

    Just stop by. Wonder if we should use Swatow instead of Shantou to respect the local dialect. Shantou is Mandarin. And the airport code reflects this: SWA. In addition I like to refer them or us as Swatownans (in local dialect, “nan” is people) instead of Shantouer for the same reason.
    Wish you do good things to promote this city. I was disappointed the last time I visited. Do enjoy the local cuisine if you are open minded. Probably you won’t find goat cheese.

    Are you overseas Shantonese? People in Shantou (when speaking English) refer to themselves as Shantou people or Chaoshan people or whatever area they are from - using Mandarin pinyin. I find it interesting overseas Swatow people I have met sometimes insist on using the English version of the local language, and find it even more interesting when foreigners insist on using it soon after arriving in Shantou - they give up after a while, as no one in Shantou uses it (in English).

    Yes. I still visit my family once a while. Enjoy your stay and do whatever to make the city better. At least make sure people around you understand it is not OK to litter, spit, drive on two lanes, run red lights, etc. They never understand that pedestrians have the right-of-the-road. As you figure out by now, they treat you much more friendlier than they do to their own countrymen, probably due to a lack of confidence. I am guilty on the receiving end too. So you may be more influential to them. It would be sensational if you can organize a volunteer event to pick up trash at the beach. I almost pulled it off last summer when I was there. I am not sure when I will be back.
    In your classroom, make sure you let them talk, in English. There is no other way to learn a language other than living in it.
